The History of Pizza: How it was invented

Contrary to popular belief, pizza is not an American invention. This is well known fact in Italy however not in the rest of the world. In 1889, Queen Margherita took a trip to Napoli and on her trip Chef Raffaele Esposito and his wife prepared the Queen a meal with the colors of the Italian flag (red, white and green). It was then that pizza was invented and it was named after the queen -- Pizza Margherita.
